PhD in Psychology 15+ Years in International Schools Structured Literacy Specialist K–5 Reading & Writing Internationally Mobile Families
Dr. Jenn Overstreet

Dr. Jenn Overstreet

Dr. Jenn Overstreet has spent 15 years inside international school classrooms across the US, Italy, and Saudi Arabia, teaching children to read and training other teachers in evidence-based literacy methods. That second part matters. Working at the level of teacher training means understanding not just how to reach individual children, but why so many instructional approaches fail to reach them in the first place.

What she has seen across every school, every curriculum, and every context is the same pattern: when a child is not reading, the instruction has not found them yet. That is not a flaw in the child. It is a gap in the system. Bright Spiral Literacy exists because that gap is solvable, and because internationally mobile families deserve access to the kind of specialist who understands both the science of reading and the specific world their child is growing up in.

Her doctorate in psychology grounds her in the cognitive science of how children develop reading and language. Her K-12 Special Education license, school principal credential, and instructional coaching certification reflect the full range of what she has been trusted to do inside schools. Her 15 years in IB, Cambridge, and American curriculum environments inform everything that happens in a BSL lesson.

Watch: Welcome to Bright Spiral Literacy

Your child is bright.
Reading is the one thing not clicking.

"Nothing is wrong with your child. Something is wrong with the instruction."

For internationally mobile families, reading gaps have a specific shape. Curriculum changes with every school move. Progress made in one country does not always transfer to the next. A child who was on track in Singapore can look like they are behind in Amsterdam, not because anything changed in them, but because the instruction changed around them. Most tutoring services are not built for that reality.

BSL lessons are built on the science of reading: the research that has transformed how the field understands decoding, phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension. Every lesson is precise, structured, and matched to exactly what your child needs, based on a formal assessment, not a guess.

Science of Reading Structured Literacy Science of Writing

The school says your child is within the normal range. You can see that something is not right.

You have tried the apps, the reading programs, maybe a tutor. Reading time is still a fight.

Your child is working hard. You are starting to wonder whether something is wrong with them. Nothing is wrong with them.

You have moved countries and the new school does not know your child yet. The progress from last year feels like it is slipping.

You are not looking for another warm person with good intentions. You need the right method, applied by someone who actually knows what they are doing.

The Bright Spiral
Literacy Method

Reading and writing don't develop in a straight line. They spiral upward. Each skill builds on the last, gaining strength and momentum as children grow. This method meets every child exactly where they are and lifts them higher.

Ground
Assess the whole child
We begin by understanding exactly where your child is, not where we assume they should be. A thorough assessment shapes everything that follows.
Build
Evidence-based lessons
Every lesson draws on research-backed methods, delivered with care and precision. No generic curricula. Each lesson is designed around your child.
Rise
Track measurable growth
Progress is visible and documented. You always know what's improving, what's next, and how your child is moving forward.
Shine
Confidence that lasts
The goal is a child who believes in themselves as a reader and writer. That confidence carries into the classroom and beyond.

Built for internationally mobile
families who need more than generic.

"Something feels off, but the school says to wait"
Your child is bright, verbal, and curious. Reading is the one thing that is not clicking. The school says they are within the normal range. You can see that something is not right, and you are done waiting for it to sort itself out.
"We have a diagnosis, or we think we might"
You have been further along this road longer than you wanted to be. Dyslexia, a processing difference, or a suspected learning profile. You are not looking for another warm person. You need a qualified specialist who knows the method.
"I don't want English to slip with every school move"
Your family is in a non-English or multilingual environment. Your child speaks English confidently, but reading and writing in English are not keeping pace. You want that foundation solid before the next transition.
Families navigating international school curricula
IB, Cambridge, American, and everything in between. Each move brings a different reading program, a different set of expectations, and a new gap to close. Dr. Overstreet has 15 years inside these systems and knows exactly what each one demands.
Children who learn differently
Every lesson at BSL starts with the child, not the curriculum. Structured literacy is not a workaround for children who think differently. It is simply how reading is best taught, and it works especially well for children the standard approach has not reached.
Families anywhere in the world
All lessons are delivered online. Time zones accommodated. The same level of expert, personalized instruction whether you are in Dubai, Singapore, Amsterdam, or anywhere else your family has landed.

Results that speak
for themselves.

One of our Grade 1 students came to BSL reversing letters and avoiding books entirely. By spring break, she was choosing chapter books on her own. Her parents hadn't seen her pick up a book voluntarily in two years.

Here are honest answers.

If something is still unclear after reading, reach out directly. There are no silly questions when it comes to your child's reading.

Results & progress
Most families notice a shift in their child's confidence and engagement within the first few lessons. Measurable gains in reading accuracy and fluency typically show up within 8 to 10 lessons, though this depends on how close together those lessons are scheduled. Consistent, frequent lessons produce faster results than lessons spread far apart. That is one reason the Summer Reading Intensive is structured the way it is. Complete and Signature packages include a formal assessment at the start and end, so you will see progress documented, not just described.
This is one of the most common things parents say before they start. Generic tutoring typically reinforces what the school is already doing, which is why it produces the same results. BSL is built on structured literacy, a research-supported methodology that works differently from the balanced literacy approach many classrooms and general tutors use. Every lesson starts with where your child actually is, assessed formally before teaching begins. The method is specific, sequential, and cumulative. If your child has not responded to other approaches, that is not a sign the child cannot learn. It is a sign the right method has not been applied yet.
Yes. The Bright Spiral Literacy Method is built on structured literacy approaches that are proven to be effective for children with dyslexia and other reading-related learning differences. Every child's plan is built from their individual assessment, so nothing is assumed and nothing is skipped. If your child has a diagnosis or a suspected profile, that context shapes the plan from the start. Dr. Overstreet holds a K-12 Special Education teaching license and has extensive experience working with children who have not responded to standard classroom instruction.
You will know because BSL builds documentation into every package. The formal pre-assessment establishes a baseline. You will hear from Dr. Overstreet or her team after lessons when there is something worth flagging, and you can email hello@brightspiralliteracy.com any time to ask about a specific lesson and will hear back within 48 hours on weekdays. Packages that include a post-assessment give you a written summary of what shifted and what comes next. Progress shows up in accuracy, fluency, and decoding. It also shows up in how a child approaches reading time, whether they avoid it, guess through it, or start to engage with it differently. Both matter.
The method
Structured literacy is an evidence-based approach to teaching reading that is explicit, systematic, and cumulative. It teaches the building blocks of reading in a specific sequence: phonemic awareness (hearing the individual sounds in words), phonics (connecting sounds to letters), fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This is different from the balanced literacy approach, which relies heavily on guessing from context and picture cues. The research on structured literacy is clear and consistent: it works for the widest range of learners, including children who have not responded to other approaches. It is not a new idea. It is what the science of reading has supported for decades.
Every lesson is built on the Bright Spiral Literacy Method: Ground, Build, Rise, Shine. We begin by connecting with your child and reviewing what came before, then move into targeted instruction on the specific skills their assessment identified. Lessons are structured and purposeful, but not rigid or mechanical. The pace is set by the child. You will hear from Dr. Overstreet or her team after lessons when there is something worth flagging, and you can always email to ask about a specific lesson. Lessons are 45 minutes, one-on-one, and delivered online via Zoom.
Where it helps, short practice activities between lessons are suggested. These are always simple and manageable, not a second layer of homework stress. Any lesson update or between-lesson practice plan will let you know what, if anything, would be useful to do before the next one. Nothing is mandatory and nothing requires you to be a reading expert at home.
Bright Spiral Literacy works with children in Kindergarten through Grade 5, roughly ages 5 to 11. Within that range, lessons are fully tailored to where your child actually is as a reader, not just their grade level.
Online lessons
For one-to-one literacy work, yes. The research on online structured literacy instruction is clear: outcomes are comparable to in-person when the teaching is intentional and the relationship is strong. Bright Spiral Literacy was built as an online program from the start, so the materials, pacing, and lesson structure are designed for the screen. Many families find their child engages better online because the environment is familiar and low-pressure.
A device with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space where your child can focus. Lessons are delivered via Zoom, which requires no account or download for the child. A headset can help with audio quality but is not required. Setup details are sent after booking.
BSL serves families worldwide. Available time slots are displayed in Rome time and span both morning and evening to accommodate families in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Scheduling is handled through Paperbell and all times are displayed in your local time zone at booking.
International & multilingual families
Yes. Dr. Overstreet has spent 15 years working inside IB, Cambridge, and American curriculum schools across three countries. She understands what each system expects, how reading is taught within each framework, and where the gaps most commonly appear for children moving between them. BSL lessons are not tied to any single curriculum and can be structured to complement whatever program your child is currently in.
It will not be a problem, and it is not ignored either. Your child's full linguistic context, what language they speak at home, what school language they are learning in, and how those two interact, is part of the assessment and the teaching plan. Dr. Overstreet has extensive experience with multilingual learners and understands that reading development in a second or additional language has its own profile. That profile shapes everything that follows.
Yes, and this is one of the core reasons BSL exists. Because lessons are delivered online, they travel with your family. There is no disruption when you move. Your child keeps the same specialist, the same method, and the same documented progress record regardless of where you are in the world. For internationally mobile families, that continuity is rare and it matters.
Credentials & fit
Dr. Overstreet holds a PhD in Psychology, which informs her understanding of how children's brains develop reading and language skills. She also holds a Master's in Educational Leadership, K-6 and K-12 Special Education teaching licenses, a School Principal License, and an Instructional Coaching Certification. She has 15 years of experience teaching children to read and training other teachers in evidence-based literacy methods across international school communities in the US, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. She has also worked as a university instructor in literacy education and as a literacy strategist with a leading global literacy consultancy.
That is exactly what the free Discovery Call is for. It is a 20-minute conversation where you describe your child's situation, ask whatever questions you have, and get a direct answer on whether BSL is the right match and which package makes sense. There is no pressure and no commitment. If BSL is not the right fit, that will be said plainly. The Starter package is also available for families who want to experience a lesson before committing to a longer package.
Practical details
All packages are paid in full via Stripe before the first lesson. Pricing is in euros. There are no hidden fees or recurring charges. Once payment is complete, you receive a booking link to schedule your lessons.
Lessons cancelled with 48 hours or more notice are rescheduled at no charge. Lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours notice are charged in full. If a child does not join within 5 minutes of the lesson start time and no prior contact has been made, the lesson is counted as used. All packages expire four months from the date of purchase, so lessons need to be completed within that window.
If you are unsure, start with the free Discovery Call and Dr. Overstreet will give you a specific recommendation based on your child's situation. As a general guide: Foundation is the right starting point for most families who want a clear picture and a few focused lessons before deciding on more. Complete is the most popular option and covers the full Bright Spiral Literacy Method start to finish. Signature adds a midway progress report, a home literacy plan, and priority scheduling for families who want the most comprehensive support.
Yes. Each child requires their own package, since every BSL lesson is built around an individual assessment and a plan specific to that child. Families with more than one child are welcome to book a Parent Literacy Strategy Session to look at both children's data together before committing to packages. That session gives you a clear picture of where each child is, what the priorities are, and whether tutoring is the right next step for one or both.
